NOTES: Prayer of Petition

Main Text: Luke 18:1-8

And he told them a parable to the effect that they oughtย always to pray and notย lose heart.ย 2ย He said,ย โ€œInย aย certainย cityย thereย wasย aย judgeย whoย neitherย fearedย Godย norย respectedย man.ย 3ย Andย thereย wasย aย widowย inย thatย cityย whoย keptย comingย toย himย andย saying, โ€˜Giveย meย justiceย againstย myย adversary.โ€™ย 4ย Forย aย whileย heย refused,ย butย afterwardย heย saidย toย himself,ย ‘Thoughย Iย neitherย fearย Godย norย respectย man,ย 5ย yetย becauseย thisย widowย keepsย botheringย me,ย Iย willย giveย herย justice,ย soย thatย sheย willย notย beatย meย downย byย herย continualย coming.โ€™ย โ€ย 6ย And the Lord said,ย โ€œHearย whatย theย unrighteousย judgeย says.ย 7ย Andย willย notย Godย giveย justiceย toย hisย elect,ย whoย cryย toย himย dayย andย night?ย Willย heย delayย longย overย them?ย 8ย Iย tellย you,ย heย willย giveย justiceย toย themย speedily.ย Nevertheless,ย whenย theย Sonย ofย Manย comes,ย willย heย findย faithย onย earth?โ€

21ย Dear friends,ย if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before Godย 22ย and receive from him anything we ask,ย because we keep his commandsย and do what pleases him.

1 John 3:21-22

14ย This is the confidenceย we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

1 John 5:14

5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.

James 1:5-7

2ย You desire but do not have, so you kill.ย You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.ย 3ย When you ask, you do not receive,ย because you ask with wrong motives,ย that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

James 4:2-3

7ย If you remain in meย and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

John 15:7

7 โ€œAsk and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 9 โ€œWhich of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

Matthew 7:7-11

5 Then Jesus said to them, โ€œSuppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, โ€˜Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6 a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.โ€™ 7 And suppose the one inside answers, โ€˜Donโ€™t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I canโ€™t get up and give you anything.โ€™ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity[a] he will surely get up and give you as much as you need. 9 โ€œSo I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 โ€œWhich of you fathers, if your son asks for[b] a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!โ€

Luke 11:5-13

Key to answered prayers is desiring what God desires! You will always ask what is right!

Earthly Fathers

  • Ask! Request it though it is yours!
  • Seek! Him, greater interest!
  • Knock! Whole new world!

A Bold Friend

  • A friend at midnight
  • How much more? Closer than a brother
  • Holy Spirit – best request you can ask for!

Unjust Judge

  • Pray always and not faint
  • Wear me out, coming continually.
  • Shall not God avenge His own?
