As I continue my study of Nehemiah, I looked at Nehemiah 6 today and here are some important things that we should all learn from and apply from this chapter.
Quick Summary:
Now before chapter 6, Nehemiah had left the Persian Empire where he was cupbearer of King Artaxerxes. Nehemiah heard about the wall in Jerusalem and began to weep in prayer for his people. After seeing him not feeling well, King Artaxerxes gave him permission to go back to the city in Judah to rebuild the wall. After planning on rebuilding the wall and reaching Jerusalem, he and other men started working on the city. While many men and their families worked on the wall, Nehemiah began to face opposition from people who didn’t want the wall to be rebuilt and who ridiculed the Jews.
Nehemiah Chapter 1-5
Now I know that your Bible is opened up at Nehemiah 6 and you have your highlighters and pen ready to look closely at these verses and see what we can take from them. Let’s go!!
What to Apply
What I usually do to apply these verses to my life is to think about what I need from these verses, what I lack/ need to activate and what I didn’t even know existed or I needed. I then write them down and ask God to reveal them to me or plant them in me. You’ll get the idea. I hope this helps you to see how these stories can be applied to our lives as well.
This one is obviously geared towards building your wall, which is completing the work that God has given to you. After studying Nehemiah for a few months, one thing that I really admire about him is that he didn’t wait on someone to tell him to rebuild the wall. His friends told him what was happening, he went straight into prayer, planned and then he was on the scene rebuilding the wall. When we study more of Nehemiah together, I will discuss the attributes of Nehemiah that God wants for us to adapt.
- Vs 2. Lord help me to use wisdom when my enemies against my purpose want to meet with me to kill it or me. Reveal to me when they are lying.
- Vs 3. Nehemiah informed them that he was busy with the work of the God and that he had no business or time stopping that to meet with them. Lord, let me not stop the work that you have given me because of invitations from man but allow me to be seen as so occupied and busy that I will not stop your work. Help me to set clear boundaries with them when it comes to me being busy doing your work.
- Vs 4. Let me be consistent and stand my ground when they continue to pressure me and my time.
- Vs 5. The fifth time they sent an unsealed letter and in verse 8, Nehemiah told them that nothing that they told them was going to happen, He kept his cool. Lord, help me to persevere, keep my cool and to stand my ground even when enemies are getting louder and determined at distracting me from my purpose.
- Vs 9. Nehemiah knew the enemies thought the Jews would get tired and so he prayed for God to strengthen his hands. Give me wisdom to know their negative thoughts against my walk. Allow their actions to reveal to me that they are not acting or working on your behalf. Let me pray for the actions that my enemies think I lack and prove that God is on my side.
- Vs 10-13. The man was a hired prophet of Nehemiah’s enemies (Tobiah and Sanballat) and not sent by God. Their plan was to ruin the reputation of Nehemiah and let him commit a sin. Lord, let me see and discern false prophets sent from enemies to ruin my reputation.
- Vs 14. Nehemiah prayed and asked God to remember those prophets that opposed or intimidated him. Lord, let me learn to still pray for my enemies and leave them to you.
- Vs 15. The wall was built. Lord, help me to rejoice after finishing the work that you have given me and reflect on everything I had to endure and persevere to get to building my wall. Let me also appreciate all the people that you place in my life to help me build the wall.
- Vs 16. Other nations were afraid because they knew the wall was built with the help and protection of God. Lord help me to know that people will be intimidated because God works with me.
- Vs 19. Even after the completion of the wall, Tobiah still tried to intimidate Nehemiah. Lord, please help me to even after the victory to know that I have the victory in you and know that even after i am done people will be attacking me. Let me be at peace knowing that I did your work.
I do hope what you read really helped you look at your wall a little differently. I pray that you get supportive people to help you build the wall like Nehemiah did. They prayed, they left battles to the Lord, and they completed the work.
What stood out when you read the passage?
A few words for I noted: perseverance, wisdom, discernment, calm, and discipline.
Until the next one, be a leader like Nehemiah!
