TEA TIME WITH RUTHIE: Speak Up and Inquire of God

Speak Up and Inquire of God

MAIN TEXT: Numbers 27:1-11

Story/Context: The Case of Zelophehad’s Daughters

The daughters were having an issue as their father passed and the law at the time was that his son would gain the inheritance, but because he had no sons, the five daughters needed to inherit from their father.

Now the way they went about it is very interesting. They didn’t revolt or cause a scene, as most would assume, they actually went to Moses about it and they would only have gotten a dowry in some cultures (that is when the bride’s family contributes to the marriage may be financially etc).

Moses, as we all know, comes up when we talk about great leadership, because he wasn’t the best at speaking, but he allowed God to use him. It is important that, as leaders; we inquire of God, especially before dealing with situations that affect the people you’re responsible for.

So eventually they got the inheritance. They allowed for a new law. They changed the system just by speaking up. I know this generation does a lot active/passive aggressively to get their points across, but what can we do in our communities etc to change norms?

They were also very faithful.

What To Learn:

  1. Have faith in your tongue/speaking up.
  2. Be bold and ask questions
  3. Even if rules/laws fight you out of something, and you think you deserve something, go to who can solve it.
  4. Consult God in all things and at all times.
