TEA TIME WITH RUTHIE: Abide in Christ

I haven’t done one of these in a while but I think this is a beautiful reminder to not just you but me of the importance of abiding in Christ.

MAIN TEXT: John 15:10-11

10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

John 15:10-11 ESV

When Jesus was here on Earth, He obeyed the commands of God and we should too because then, we will be able to abide in His love. He told us this so that we feel complete with the joy, and the thought of what happens when we obey, the reward is love.

Jesus connected true discipleship with obedience to His commands and honoring His Word. Jesus  fulfilled this in regard to His Father; the disciple must fulfill it in regard to Jesus.

When the disciple fails to abide in the love of Jesus and thereby fails to keep His commandments, that disciple will not experience the fullness of joy Jesus promised to those who do abide in His love and obedience.

The joy of Jesus isn’t the same as what is commonly understood as happiness or excitement. The joy of Jesus is not the pleasure of a life of ease; it is the exhilaration of being right with God, and consciously walking in His love and care. We can have that joy – we can have His joy – and have it as an abiding presence.

IMPORTANT WORD: JOY

A spiritual quality that lasts forever. We always have it. Having joy includes feeling good cheer and a vibrant happiness. But joy, in its fuller, spiritual means of expressing God’s goodness, involves more. It is a deep rooted, inspired happiness.

I am able to receive the joy of the Lord through being a true disciple that obeys His commands and keep them. I will be able to abide in His love by that firstly, and then because of what I know, I’m able to receive the joy of the Lord, which is not what we understand as happiness or excitement that fades away, but it is forever.

The word that stood out is: JOY

Prompt: Say a prayer thanking God that He gives us joy and that we are able to abide in Him and experience His love and joy forever.
