1. Raina Hutchinson – Happy Birthday to Hope
INSTAGRAM: @raina.la.reina
Happy Birthday to me!
Happy Birthday to having to watch others enjoy their college lives while I’m working nine to five
Happy Birthday to watching others succeed while I feel like I’ve lost all my drive
Happy Birthday to being left here all alone
With almost nothing to call my own
Happy Birthday to countless job rejections
All but one
Happy Birthday to the pool on my pillow beside which I lay at rest
The one made of tears
I’m so glad it’s no longer there
Happy Birthday to that wrinkle on my face that symbolizes neither undesirability nor increasing proximity to the grave
But every drop of wisdom that through my struggles I have gained
Happy Birthday to looking in the mirror and ,for once, not hating what I see
Happy Birthday to the seed I’ve sowed and nurtured
Happy Birthday to Hope
Happy Birthday to me!
2. Kyleon Thomas – The Center of My Life
INSTAGRAM: @kyleon.16
God the center of my life,
Yes, the yolk,
Carried me from far,
Mended my every scar,
He spoke, I followed, from hell I was revoked,
My Father not biologically paternal,
He created me to love me,
He is Eternal,
Through every fail,
His love sails,
Though ever slam or beat,
He is the drummer,
Through life’s every cry,
God neva fail me,
Just like Island Grill fries,
God the center of my life,
His love cuts deep like a knife,
How can I repay Him?
Because He always comes through, needle, thread, eye,
I want to be a great artiste and draw more to Him,
Be a zip and pull more from sin, Jesus,
The center of my life,
He gave His,
So I will repay Him with mine.
3. Raina Hutchinson – Teddy
Ecstatic, the dog sprung up and down
Twirling its head ‘round and round
His owner stooped down and buckled him up
With that object that always fit his neck like a cuff
But though the limiting leash could confine his body
His golden essence it failed to contain
As when his bleary eyed owner took rest on a bench
Teddy could finally free himself from that rein
And so he flung himself into the road
As an unprepared driver approached
And with a screeching halt there Teddy lied
With his young owner rushing to his side, with frightened eyes
Drowning out the sound of the apologetic driver
As he looked down on his furry childhood
Its golden body torn open, exposing its entrails
Like the stuffing of a teddy bear torn, lifeless and frail
Although sooner or later with his childhood the owner had to part
The golden memories he shared with Teddy remained in his heart.
4. TheWalkingTree – THEMITOXANDRIA
A gracious growth induced
By rivers of living water
Where my seeds of potential were thoughtfully tossed
They bathed daily in blissful tickles
Until delicate fingertips of God gently
Traced my slim stalk into the breathtaking air
I could feel Him swim
Through my toes planted on the solid rock
Fertilising my every stage into excellence,
Running straight up my spine
To nourish the babe of my wisdom.
Now it’s time to move
We move together
And though I’ve already spread my roots deep here
there’s still more to reach
More to see
More to feel
More to give
The threat of Uprooting from familiarity
Lingers stagnantly in the air
A stagnancy I must leave
And lift my feet from where they simmered for years.
So I take my roots
Throw them gently over my shoulder
And walk downstream into purpose.
