NOTES: Joseph

Competition Reminder!!

I am sure you must have caught on to what I’ve been doing the past few weeks. I know there are people out there (don’t worry I got you) who are not familiar with the bible stories and I have been digging up my archives, emails, hangout messages etc just to find as many notes as I can on these stories and of course eventually I’ll prepare my refreshed quality content for you guys. I just want you to have something to munch on.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. Be blessed.

Genesis 37

  • Joseph was the firstborn son for Rachel, his father’s (Jacob) true love.
  • His dream was more of a vision that gave him a preview of the future.
  • Everything that happened in the dream was a symbol of what would take place in the future.
  • SIDENOTE: Be careful who you share your vision to. Some will steal it, tear you apart, or discourage you from completing it.
  • The dreams were telling him what the future holds.

Seer/Prophet

Explanation: Someone who generally witnesses the pulling of the veil or curtains for the future.

Remember: It’s not a matter of ‘if’, because it will happen.

  • This is why Joseph was rebuked by his brothers. They knew it was going to happen.
  • The exposure of favoritism in families was shown in this story.

Dream vs. Vision

  • Dream: – What you connect with mentally or spiritually
    • Present occurrence
    • While asleep (deep sleep)
  • Vision: – Telling of future reference
    • Can get it while awake
  • Joseph and his family understood the dream.

The Coat of Many Colours

  • His father (Jacob) made him the coat.
  • The coat caused friction in the family.
  • Colours reflect light and illumination (and also Gods glory and righteousness emanating from Him)
  • It also signified Joseph as being Jacob’s choice as the future head of the clan – an honor normally bestowed upon the firstborn son.

  Sheckem

  • Jacob sent Joseph to the and look for his brothers.
  • The brothers saw Joseph as the favourite and the tattletale.
  • His father, on the other hand as mature and responsible.
  • When Joseph went in search for his brothers, he didn’t see them. (He still persisted to find them).

SIDENOTE: Sometimes you are given a position of authority, people know what you come with or your ability (a specific response). As it relates to instructions from those above you, Do as you are told and come back with 2 or 3 more responses to the problem that they did not expect you to come with and you will be chosen for later stuff.

  • When Joseph still went after his brothers and not go after back to his father, its because he knew the authority that was given to him by his father. This is when they dismissed his dreams.

Journey to Egypt

  • He was sold to Ishmaelite’s (merchants) who were going to Egypt and carry him to the slaves market to be bought.
  • Potiphar had to bid for Joseph at the slaves market like slavery in the modern era.

#BigDeal: Joseph’s First ‘Pitfall’ Moment

  • He was thrown in a pit and his only intention at the time was to go home and take care of his father and God’s promise being fulfilled (from Abraham, Isaac and now his father Jacob).
  • Joseph wanted to go back but God wanted him to go forward.
  • SIDENOTE: When you sin or have been disappointed or have a setback get up and go forward.

Forgiveness

  • As believers, we tend to not forgive ourselves, even after God already forgave us.
  • God forgives us instantly
  • When you fail, do not see your relationship with God as a master-slave relationship, instead realize that you do not have to win back his love.
  • When we know God’s love, and is able to love it, also helps others to better move on instead of feeling stuck.
  • When God forgives, we need to forgive as well.
  • It is how you respond ‘in’ and ‘to’ your tragedy.

Integrity

  • Joseph remained faithful and had integrity – this is what part if I was able to see in Joseph.

In Lock Up

  • Joseph had to know I just do a new normal, new culture, and new people.
  • SIDENOTE: Sometimes in the midst of your failure and setback (by the way bad things can and will happen because of the world we live in) you will be recognized for your attitude and integrity like Joseph was in getting the job.
  • God shows the beginning and the end.

At Potiphar’s House

  • Joseph was now settled and working.
  • SIDENOTE: Don’t live life based on how you feel but what you know sometimes our physical senses, like emotion, show up when we are to use our knowledge.
  • An example is the children of Israel in the wilderness. They never did realize how close to God they were, and they were only focused on where they were and complaining about it.

God showed up in every aspect of the journey. The fire would protect them from the tribes, warm them at night, kill insects etc and give them light.

  • God’s favor was with Joseph and it had caused Potiphar’s business to prosper. (Potiphar was a Captain in  Pharaoh’s household).

Distraction

  • Z u l e I k h a (Potiphar’s Wife). Threw a party for Joseph and brought or invited 40 of the most beautiful men. She was obsessed with Joseph based on the Quran.

Living Godly

  • Integrity and God will have persons seeing you differently and you standing out
  • Walk around Godly and not religious.
  • Ensure that you are living the Word before you say anything to anyone.
  • Your best sermon is the life you live.
  • No matter what is happening to you, let your character and integrity reign.
