A group that I’m a part of hosted a movie night some time ago and the film was I Can Only Imagine. For the past few weeks I have been reflecting on that film and what it really brought me back to.
When I was a child, this album came our with MercyMe and my mom actually had the DVD and the CD. She played it all the time and in turn, my sisters and I became big fans of MercyMe and their music.
After watching the film, I went through some old CD cases we had at home and I found the MercyMe CD. I thought it was just amazing how the songs brought me back to a posture that I needed to be reminded of.
Pure Worship.
I remember watching interviews after the film and I realised that the lead singer had a lot in common with my fascination of Heaven. And if you think about it, that really is the focus of the song, “I Can Only Imagine”.
One of the most concerning things to me is the posture that many people have to God, heaven, life and everything in that category is not supporting the “Pure Worship” God requires for us to execute.
If you think about it, most of what we are taught today has very little to do with Pure Worship. Even in the church, many saved individuals wouldn’t be able to share personal experiences that they have had with the Father. A lot can only talk about their leader’s experiences or a televangelist that they watch on YouTube and that is a big problem.
The real raw worship is no longer what is being encouraged. It is so rare. now everybody is chasing the feeling or as I said earlier, the aesthetic. The pandemic changed a lot for us, and that is great, but after a while, Christian TikTok became toxic and the place that so many trashed the beliefs of others instead of showing love and correcting with that same love.
Some music became popular because of the look, the sound, and no one giving any attention to the words, so it still seems God related because His name is mentioned.
What is Pure Worship?
Purity in worship is not the same as attaining perfection in worship. Pure worship is that wonderful moment when a struggling heart is able to get past itself and give honour and praise to the Worthy One, and he receives the incomplete offerings of that weak vessel with open arms. When it is offered in simplicity and sincerity, one small sacrifice of praise becomes something holy and powerful and pure.
Chris Du Pre – (The Lost Art of Pure Worship p 26)
Obedience is a good thing, but imagine a father whose children only come to him in response to his summons, feeling obligated to come. For a father, what a joy it is when your children come on their own because they want to be with you. That is the essence of the heart of pure worship – worship that is initiated by the love of the worshipper.

So after this little run-through, what do you think we can all unlearn about Pure Worship, gospel music, the Christian aesthetic and just how we represent Christ? Never forget what we are created for.
